Split ends, or trichoptilosis to be precise, is the longitudinal splitting of hair fibre through the cortex. It develops after the protective cuticle has been worn away from the end of hair fibres. Any chemical or physical trauma that weathers the hair may eventually lead to split ends. It can be induced by chemical processes like perming, straightening and bleaching; over-heating with hair dryers or tongs;

or vigorous brushing and the use of damaged combs with broken teeth.

Typically the damaged hair fibre splits into two or three strands and the split may be two or three centimetres in length. However the greater the damage to the hair fibre the more severe the split ends may be. Splits running several centimetres in length and in multiple strands is possible in severely weathered hair. This gives the impression of finer hair and makes manageability and styling of the hair more of a problem.

Once the cuticle is removed from hair shaft, it is impossible to replace. So the best treatment for split ends is to cut the hair and remove the split and all of the damaged hair. Treatments that involve "glueing" the frayed parts of fibre together do not work well or last very long.

Leave-in conditioners and hair treatments will only temporarily stick the split back together. None are permanent repairers, and unfortunately nothing will repair split ends apart from a professional trim.

split ends are very very noticeable. its where your ends start looking thiner then the rest and fall apart easy.

FYI: If your hair is damaged and you have split ends, the only effective way to get rid of them is to have them cut off.Do not ignore your split ends, because once they are there, they will only get worse. The longer you leave them, the further they will climb up the hair shaft. When you finally go for a trim, you will have no choice by to chop off even MORE of your hair!

The link goes to a picture that shows you how it looks up close. But a split end is at the bottom of your hair and their is a little "split" in your strand.

look at the end of your hair very closely. if you see the end of it, if you see the hair split..that's a split end. think of the piece of hair as being mutant...having two or three heads :)

Split ends can be avoided with regular haircuts, not washing your hair everyday (wash only 2-3 times a week) and gental brushing

If you have damaged hair with a split end, it will be dry and brittle. The ends will have a split in it. The best way to find them, is by grabbing a few hairs and look at the ends. You can cut the ends, if you see any splits.

hold up your hair against light and look closely at the end.

if it's split ends, one strand of hair will split into two literally.

or if you notice that the ends is exceptionally lighter in colour than the rest of the hair, sooner or later it will end up as a split end too.
