you can use a curling iron...but if you dont want to damage your hair, do it naturally like i do:
make two braids of your hair, really tightly. then, go over them in hair oil. keep it for a few hours. (5-6)
then take out the braids and put some curling mousse in your hair...and scrunch it.

if you don't want to have to use a curling iron every morning, then put it into a braid at night.

Get a squirt bottle, fill it with water and add 3tbs of sea salt... And then spray in your hair until damp. And thennn let it dry! And it leaves pretty curls! :)

You can try braiding your hair when you get out of the shower and sleeping on it. But it's only a quick fix. If your hair gets wet, you'll lose your waves. If you really want curly hair that will last longer than from shower to shower, get a perm.

I was wondering the same thing. I went and spoke to a stylist and they told me that most of the photograph's you see of celeb's and that sort of thing are not perms. Perms will give you a pretty uniform and fake looking curl and they can turn out really bad, not to mention fry your hair. I would suggest trying out a few different sizes of foam rollers, or heated rollers. Foam are cheaper, if you just want to experiment. I have tried putting about 40 rollers in my hair when I get out of the shower. The curling iron was nice, because it allows you to adjust each curl, but the curl won't last. It is better to get it when its wet and sleep on it, or at least leave it for about two hours, depending on the thickness of your hair.
I take a thick foam roller (goody brand for me) and layer my hair into four layers. I start with the smallest at the top and work my way down with the sizes of the rollers, using the widest at the very bottom layer. If you put the hair around the roller like you would a curling iron, you will get well formed curls, just like a curling iron. If you want more of a wavy, messy look, try twisting the hair first, then wrapping it around the roller.
If you do the second method, your hair will look horrible when you first take it out. Don't panic. I run my fingers through mine, then blowdry it upside down (because it never really fully dries), scrunching as I go. The more you run your fingers through, the more natural it will look. Its up to you (definitely experiment a few times first). Then, I take a curl specific mousse and put about a palm full into my hair by scrunching. Then, if I really want it to look nice I will add a shine balm to the outside layers.
It sounds like a lot of work, but I am new to this curl stuff too, and I found it pretty easy once I realized how to do it. If it gets really big, pin the top parts back with bobby pins, and just add more product which will separate the curls and weigh it down a little.
I have tried a million things and my hair is as straight as a wip. For a long lasting effect (Until you shower again, basically), this works. Curling irons work for some, but not people with hair that is difficult to work with.
Phew! Good luck :)
