Is a perm really damaging for hair, I have soft straight hair, and I dont want a perm to dry my hair

It will damage your hair.

At the salon, and at home kits, there are intense conditioners that help with the immediate appearance of the damage, but the damage will be done. You may not readily notice it, but three months down the road you will begin to notice more split ends.

Your hair is not really elastic-like, yet to make it get a curl %26amp; keep it, it has to essentially be stretched out %26amp; then 'locked-in' while in a curl. This stretching out cannot be undone.

Conditioners will help with the overall feel of your hair, but they cannot undo what has been done.

perms do do damage. whatever basically causes damage. but some perms do dry out your hair.

It doesn't dry your hair out. But what a perm does is straighten your hair out, but since you already have straight and soft hair, YOU DON'T NEED A PERM.
